Workforce Training
Workforce training classes are an important part of the Lewiston Adult Education program. LAE offers many classes to allow you to upgrade existing work skills, learn new skills, or explore other career possibilities. Why do people come to LAE for workforce training?

  • Planning career advancement.
  • Re-training after a layoff or shutdown.
  • Looking to change careers.
  • Plan a career, not just bounce from job to job.

Adult Basic Education
Basic reading, writing, and math classes are free to adults who do not have a high school diploma or GED. We offer instruction in areas such as reading, writing and math. The program operates in a supportive and confidential environment. If you know someone who wants to increase their skills, suggest that they call the LAE Adult Learning Center at 784-2928.
HiSET Preparation and Testing

If you had to leave school before completing your diploma, you can earn an equivalency diploma by passing the 5-part HiSET test. The tests measure things that you may have learned through reading, work and other life experiences. Free classes can help you get ready to take the tests. Maine now uses the HiSET exam in the place of the GED. Sessions are held during the day and at night at the Lewiston Adult Learning Center on Birch Street.

High School Diploma and College Preparation
You can finish your high school education by taking academic and vocational classes for high school credit. These credits will be added to those you already have earned for past schooling, training and work experience. Classes that you take for high school credit are free. You only pay for books and lab fees if they apply to your course. Classes are also available to help college bound students brush-up their skills. Classes like algebra, biology and chemistry help students meet admission requirements for post-secondary schools.
College Transition Program
The Lewiston Adult Education College Transition Program (CTP) can help you attain your goal for post-secondary education. Through sharpening academic skills necessary for admission, to improving study techniques, time-management and test taking strategies, and making connections with other CTP graduates who have successfully made the transition to college, the CTP will get you where you want to go.
English For Speakers Of Other Languages
Our free ESOL classes can help people to improve speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. In addition, we offer free classes to prepare adults to become citizens of the United States. Currently, people from over 20 countries are participating in these classes.
